We’re improving the working lives of parents

The Healthy Mothers Workplace Coalition, directed by LAS-ELC, has led employers to improve policies covering thousands of San Francisco workers and their families.

We’ve done this by showing employers the benefits of strong policies for pregnancy and parental leave, breastfeeding accommodation, and work-life balance — and honoring those that support families with our annual awards of excellence.

On July 14, we’re taking the message nationwide. Coalition members will participate in a free webinar for public health leaders and colleagues. Participants will learn about the research on how policies make workplaces more supportive and equitable — and how to replicate our innovative and successful coalition in their area.

Studies have shown that workers covered by family-friendly policies are healthier, and their families are more successful, while turnover in their workplaces is lower and productivity is higher. Labor Secretary Tom Perez agrees. And the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services even offers instructions for employers on “creating a breastfeeding-friendly worksite.”

Presenters at the webinar will include Curtis Chan, a pediatrician and the director of maternal, child and adolescent health for San Francisco’s Department of Public Health; Sili Recio, an organizer with the national advocacy group Moms Rising; Erika Sabbath, an assistant professor in the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work; and Sharon Terman, a senior staff attorney with LAS-ELC in San Francisco. Find details here  on how to attend (or download the webinar later).

Then, on July 20, we’re offering a free workshop at the offices of past award winner Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in downtown San Francisco for all types of employers — from tech companies to nonprofits to restaurants and retailers — on current laws and the benefits of family-friendly policies.  Find details and register here. Pastries and coffee will be served. You can also get help completing the one-page application for a Healthy Mothers Workplace Award of Excellence.

A collaboration of nonprofits, government agencies, and private employers, the coalition has given out 75 awards since 2013. This year’s award ceremony is set for Sept. 27. To learn more, visit healthymothersworkplace.org or click here.[:es]
