Legal Aid at Work is the essential advocate for justice on the job for low-wage workers and their families.

We serve workers like Irene, a human rights activist who fell victim to labor trafficking when she fled from persecution from her home country. Upon arrival in California, she was forced to work more than 16-hour days, cleaning and providing child care, but was paid nothing for her many hours of difficult work.

“When I came here, I did not think I would become a victim,” said Irene. “If this can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.”

Through a trusted friend, Irene was connected to Legal Aid at Work through Community Legal Aid SoCal.

With help from our dedicated attorneys and law students, we were able to secure a $177,000 award for her—a reflection of the extreme violations she experienced.

“After the hearing was over, you could just see how relieved Irene was to tell her story and fight for justice, which made all of the hard work more than worth it.” Said Caleb Penrod, a second-year law student at the University of San Diego, who helped Irene with her case. “Achieving this victory has been my most rewarding experience in law school.”

“I’ve saved lives, and it’s good to know that I can be saved also,” said Irene. “We need to make sure that everyone has access to these amazing services.”
