Community Legal Services Fellow in San Bernardino County (1 Year Position)

Summary

Legal Aid at Work seeks a Legal Fellow for its Community Legal Services Program to help expand its services in San Bernardino County.  The Fellow’s work will be conducted in partnership with the Warehouse Worker Resource Center (WWRC), a community-based organization in Ontario, California, that focuses on improving working conditions in the warehousing industry and also serves as a leading workers’ rights resource for the Inland Empire region in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.  This is a one-year, grant funded position, with no expectation of renewal due to funding constraints.

In 2021, Legal Aid at Work and WWRC will launch a new Workers’ Rights Clinic location in Ontario, the second location in San Bernardino County. The Fellow will help to set up and run the clinic, while also supporting WWRC’s legal department on a daily basis to provide assistance to low-wage workers.

Responsibilities

With supervision by Legal Aid at Work’s Community Legal Services Program Director and daily guidance from WWRC’s Legal Director, the Fellow’s activities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Providing individual counseling and representation to low-wage workers;
  • Supervising law students and other legal counselors at both locations of the Workers’ Rights Clinic in San Bernardino County;
  • Managing the design and distribution of Clinic instructions and protocols;
  • Conducting community and law school outreach and education; and
  • Providing know-your-rights educational programing to low-wage workers.

Due to COVID-19, it is anticipated that the fellow will work remotely through at least the first four months of 2021.  If COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed thereafter, the fellow will be asked to work out of WWRC’s offices in Ontario, California (though the fellow will probably not need to come into the office every day), but should also be ready to travel on occasion to San Bernardino or the High Desert to do trainings, intakes, or meetings. Nevertheless, the Search Committee will consider applicants who are only able to work remotely throughout all of 2021.

Requirements

The position requires California Bar membership or pending admission.  Extensive evening work and frequent travel within Southern California will be required (provided COVID-19 related travel restrictions have been lifted).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A demonstrated commitment to workers’ rights or other social justice priorities;
  • Experience or familiarity worker organizing campaigns;
  • Knowledge of federal and California employment law and court procedures;
  • Excellent legal research and writing and oral advocacy skills;
  • A close familiarity with California’s demographics and need for legal services in underserved areas as well as experience working with relevant communities;
  • A demonstrated ability to be a creative problem solver, strategic thinker, and legal innovator;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership and organizational abilities, and the capacity to work both collaboratively and independently; and
  • Fluency in Spanish.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by ESC Local 20.
