LAAW Attorney Katie Fiester quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle about new federal tip pooling law

LAAW Attorney Katie Fiester was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle on the new federal law allowing the pooling of tips between waiters and others in the “chain of service,” like cooks and bussers.

“While tip pooling is lawful, all too often we see tip pooling gone wrong, where managers or owners are taking a cut,” she said. “Tips are being distributed not as frequently as they should be — in one case we filed, only once a year.”

She praises the new legislation for making it harder for owners to find excuses for claiming tips. “When it comes to tips, the more regulated they are and the more transparent they are, the better it is for the workers who earn them,” she said.
