On January 24, Legal Aid at Work (“LAAW”) launched a new Workers’ Rights Clinic site in San Bernardino, in collaboration with the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino (“LASSB”), a legal services organization that has served the Inland Empire for over fifty years.

Our new Clinic site is housed at LASSB’s offices in San Bernardino and is staffed by attorneys from LAAW and members of the local bar.  Initially operating once per month, the Clinic provides free legal services to low-wage workers, who face a range of workplace problems, such as unpaid wages and overtime, health and safety violations, and discrimination.  In addition to the Clinic, we are providing free legal services throughout the month via videoconference, and in some cases, will represent clients in administrative proceedings before state agencies.  We will also conduct know-your-rights trainings for low-wage workers in the local community.

At the inaugural Clinic, we served workers both in-person and by videoconference.  The following day, we conducted an employment law workshop for LASSB’s staff, which will enhance screening for workplace issues across LASSB’s legal services programs.

Nearly a decade after the official end date of the Great Recession, San Bernardino remains one of the most economically depressed cities in the nation, with a poverty rate of over 32%.  Across the Inland Empire, many workers face extremely low-paying, precarious, and dangerous working conditions, yet lack widespread access to high-quality, free legal services.  Our new Clinic site will address this unmet need and, we believe, make a positive difference in the lives of our clients.
