Breastfeeding accommodations close to passage in San Francisco

All 11 members of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors are supporting a proposal from Supervisor Katy Tang to require city agencies to develop policies to support their employees who are nursing moms.

Tang announced in a press release Tuesday that she expected the board to approve the ordinance.

“We are so pleased that the City and County of San Francisco is continuing to take the lead in supporting working parents,” said Sharon Terman, director of the Work & Family Program at Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center. “The Lactation in the Workplace Policy will reduce stress among nursing employees, help them breastfeed longer, and improve their children’s health and wellbeing.”

The Healthy Mothers Workplace Coalition, which LAS-ELC helps run, is offering a free workshop on Tuesday for employers interested in getting recognition for policies that support working families. Click here for more information.

The coalition has led employers to adopt family-friendlier policies covering thousands of workers in San Francisco alone.
