Legal Aid at Work Alumni Circle Launch

We recognize that many of our connections have gone on to do important and inspiring work—that’s why we launched an alumni group as a meaningful way to strengthen bonds and continue to grow the movement to empower low-wage workers and marginalized communities.
All alumni of Legal Aid at Work are invited to join, including those who worked with us when we were called the Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center! Alumni include: former clinic students, law clerks & interns, employees, and volunteer attorneys.
Major US Event Staffing Company to Reform Hiring Practices Under Settlement Deal

One of the nation’s largest event staffing companies, Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC), has agreed to reform its hiring practices after Legal Aid at Work attorney Molly Lao represented a California job applicant who complained he was illegally rejected solely because of a prior criminal conviction.
Under the settlement, CSC will reform its hiring process to comply with the Fair Chance Act, creating a path to opportunity for tens of thousands of workers with conviction histories.

Lawsuit Filed to Ensure all Employers Follow State Law and Protect Political Speech in the Workplace

Legal Aid at Work filed a federal lawsuit in San Diego on behalf of Lauren Gaw, a registered nurse who was fired by her employer for having stickers supporting Palestine on her personal water bottles at work.
The complaint alleges that SCA Health, an outpatient surgical center in La Jolla, violated California law by selectively punishing her for exercising her right to express her political views in the workplace.
SB 590, Paid Leave to Care for Chosen Family Bill, is awaiting Gov. Newsom’s signature

The latest win comes out of Sacramento. Our Work & Family team has been working with partners across the state and supporters like you to advocate for an expansion of paid leave laws. SB 590 was just passed and is awaiting Gov. Newsom’s signature.
If signed into law, SB 590 will allow workers to take paid leave to care for chosen family members.
We are so grateful for our partners, supporters, and all of the workers who made these wins possible. Here’s to more victories for the rest of the year and beyond!
