Legal Aid at Work Welcomes New Board Members

We welcome Professor Catherine Fisk and attorney Daniel J. Herling to our Board of Directors.

As the Barbara Nachtrieb Armstrong Professor of Law at UC Berkeley, Catherine Fisk teaches labor law, employment law, and employment discrimination, in addition to course on civil procedure, the legal profession, and the First Amendment. She also works with students on briefs on labor issues in state and federal appellate courts and on practicums about wage theft and other issues facing low-income workers.

Professor Fisk taught at Duke University, University of Southern California, and Loyola Law School before serving as a founding professor at UC Irvine Law School from 2008 to 2017. Her writing includes five books and numerous articles on many topics related to the mission of Legal Aid at Work, such as increasing restrictions on labor protest, labor history, and employment class actions.

Professor Fisk practiced law as an associate at Rogovin, Huge & Schiller in Washington, D.C., and later as a member of the appellate staff of the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. She received her B.A. from Princeton University and her J.D. from UC Berkeley. After graduating, she clerked for Judge William Norris on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Her husband is Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of Berkeley Law.

Daniel J. Herling, a partner with Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Pompeo PC in San Francisco, focuses primarily on product liability issues as they pertain to consumer products. Mr. Herling has successfully defended clients alleging false or misleading labels on a variety of products, including food and drugs.

Mr. Herling has been named the last seven years in a row as one of the Best Lawyers in America: Product Liability Litigation. He started his career as a prosecutor for the U.S. Navy and later became partner at Gordon & Rees LLP. While there, he served as Americas Regional Director for MULTILAW, a global network of independent law firms. He later moved to Duane Morris LLP and Keller & Heckman LLP before joining Mintz Levin in 2013.

Mr. Herling received his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law and his B.S. from the University of Dayton.
