Summer lectures kick off with talk about resistance

How can lawyers defend marginalized communities in the current political climate? How can diverse communities begin to take action? And how can they take advantage of larger coalitions and alliances? These questions and more will be answered during the first talk in our summer lecture series.

“Resisting Together: Strength in Diversity” begins at noon on Tuesday, June 13, and runs until 1:30 p.m. Here are the panelists:

Cat Brooks, interim director of the National Lawyers Guild’s Bay Area chapter

Cat Brooks is a Black Lives Matter activist and co-founder of the Anti Police-Terror Project, which works to end state-sanctioned murder and violence. Brooks is well-known for her activist work and is also the interim director of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

Matt Nelson, executive director of presente.org.

Matt Nelson is the executive director of Presente, which is an organization that advances Latinx power. He has worked for years on campaigns for marginalized communities, including Latinx, Black people, refugees and workers.

Elica Vafaie, program manager at National Security and Civil Rights.

Elica Vafaie is a program manager and attorney at the National Security and Civil Rights and the Asian Law Caucus. Vafaie’s work focuses on immigrant rights and national security.

The lecture series will be held on six Tuesdays at noon between June 13 and Aug. 1. Lawyers can receive 1.5 hours of MCLE credit for each talk they attend in person (most will be at our office at 180 Montgomery St., San Francisco). For a flier (screen-reader-accessible), click here
